Umm Travis from
Tea Break Thoughts tagged me! Sorry for the late reply sister, I was off today and was out visiting friends and family.
The Rules:
Link back to the person who tagged you.List 3 ahadith you’d like to pin up in your masjid and why.Tag some of your fellow bloggers by linking to them in your post and don’t forget to post a comment on their blog to let them know they’ve been tagged. The aHadeeth: 1-Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle (p.b.u.h) said,
“When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have done an evil act.”Sometimes, it is very frustrating to listen to the Friday Khutba at my masjid. My local mosque is in downtown DC, so most people come there straight from work on Fridays and it gets very crowded. The women have an entire section to themselves dowsntairs and a big TV screen that displays the Imam live so we can see what's happening in the main room upstairs. Sounds great right? well....except that women chat as loudly as if they were in a coffee shop, laugh outloud during the khutba, yell at their kids, sometimes even fight among themselves. There was an incident when one sister was talking so loud that another one asked her to keep quiet and she refused and started screaming and talking in a foreign language and they were going back and forth while the Imam was delivering the Khutba. Mind you, these were not young people either, but the regular
'aunties' who think the mosque is part of their backyards. Subhanallah, is this the way to behave in a mosque? Shouldn't we have a better adab while at the mosque especially during the khutba?
Imam Asi (on the picture) outside of the mosque on Fridays.............>
2-Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Umar:
Allah’s Apostle said, “A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection .” BukhariIt breaks my heart to enter the mosque on Fridays while I see Imam Mohammad Asi praying on the side-walk with his followers. Rain or shine, summer or winter, Imam Asi does his khutba and jummah prayers on the side-walk because the Saudis banned him from entering the mosque for the past 25 years. The only Eid when he tried praying inside the mosque, he was arrested and charged on counts of “unlawful entry into the mosque” and “disturbing a religious service” and spent Eid in Jail. Subhanallah, did they forget that muslims have a God-given right to enter the masjid? Muslims of all creeds are free to enter any mosque. Even non muslims visit the mosque, why aren't they allowing Imam Asi, a muslim brother to enter the mosque? So, on Fridays after praying inside, I always try to stop by the side-walk facing the opposite side of the mosque to listen to Imam Asi's khutba. With his clear voice he denounces corruption, denounces the behavior of those who have put him in this situation for the past 25 years. Sometimes, it will be snowing and Imam Asi will be there praying on the cold floor, making dawah using his mike, reciting the Quran with his beautiful voice that makes pedestrians stop and wonder why this old man would be praying outside of a mosque with about 10 or 15 people....May Allah reward Imam Asi for his struggles, sabr and perseverance. HERE3-It was narrated by Abu Malik al-Ash'ari that the Messenger of Allah saw said:'Cleanliness is half of faith and Alhamdulillah fills the scale, and SubhanaAllah and Alhamdulillah fill up what is between the heavens and the earth. Salah is a light, and charity is proof (of one's faith) and endurance is a brightness and the Qur'an is a proof on your behalf or against you. All men go out early in the morning and sell themselves, thereby setting themselves free or destroying themselves.'[Muslim]It is just such a beautiful hadith that sums up so many characters and behaviors of a good muslim. Here, the Prophet saw is telling us that cleanliness is half of faith, therefore it should not be taken lightly. Yet, how many Muslim brothers/sisters go to the masjids to offer their salahs, and annoy their brothers, their Lord, and His Angels, by not taking care of their smell/appearance/socks/clothing/cleanliness?
It is very important for us to keep our persons clean especially when going to the masjids. Our level of cleanliness should go beyond the outer self to touch our hearts and souls. The areas outside the masjid are littered with paper and garbage, yet this is where we stand and pray. How can we pray in filth? This is not the way of the Prophet saw. If we see litter, let's pick it up, and know that our reward is with Allah swt inshallah.
I think these 3 hadiths would help us ponder on our behavior in the mosque and also on our behavior towards each other. Our muslim brothers and sisters have a right upon us, and we also have a right upon ourselves. We will be a better ummah if we learn to accept and give rights when they are due.

subha'nallah! i didnt know about Imam Asi being treated like that! I didnt even read about that anywhere....why is he banned? thats outrageous and so sad! May Allah reward him for not giving up his commitment.
Mashallah I love the first hadith you listed --- I agree some women don't have no adub sadly I think it happens almost everywhere...for some reason when you tell them to be quiet they get angry and start screaming as if they are in their own home, they have no manners at all.
Subahanallah, I had no idea...thats just utterly disgusting if you ask me:( how can they treat an Imam like that.
The third hadith is so true coz you have to follow your deen on all aspects of it, theres no point doing one thing and not the other, some people don't even wash themselves, and they expect to pray to their Lord like that --- anyways all beautiful hadiths you've chosen sis:)
THAT WAS MY MASJID. Awww I loved going there, I love the Imam's tilawat and during Ramadan, it's simply beautiful, the Imam [from Senegal] has such a beautiful voice, mash'Allah.
As for Imam Asi, I don't know the full story but I know there is a lot that us the general public do not know and it's related to politics and 9-11. Still though, where is the love?
I was thinking yesterday about my relationship with Allah and thought that I needed to improve it, to worship Him according to my needs [hadith]. I'm moving out so the deciding factor for choosing is to dedicate a space if not room to Allah- I could pray there, medidate there, read there, make du'a there, etc.
Finally, to all the brothers and sisters reading this, please fast for the 1st nine days of dhul hijjah, starting tomorrow.
Wasalaam.
Y.S.
This is a great tag, I'll get on it tonight/tomorrow inshaAllah.
MashAllah.
Nice post.
beautiful hadeeths sister, beautiful
Habayeb,
Imam Asi has been praying outside of the mosque for years and he is there every friday subhannallah every friday even when its freezing outside or raining! He's also been banned from Hajj. Why ban a muslim from performing his religious duties? This is very sad indeed. You can read more about it on the link I provided in my post. But all they said was that "they had information that a cache of arms was in the Islamic center". He's been banned right after being elected Imam of the mosque so poeple are saying that they did not like him, allahum ahlam, whatever the reasons this is not Islam, you don't bann muslims who just want to pray from entering a mosque.
MIna,
Some people think the mosque is part of their backyard! They come there to chat as if it was a coffee shop, you gotta see it to beleive it.And the cleanliness is another important issue as well.
Y.S,
As far as Imam Asi's situation it is not related to 9-11, he's been banned since 1983 and whatever the reasons are, it is just outrageous to ban someone from entering a mosque! Especially if all they want is pray. It is very sad to watch.
Mona,
Can't wait to read it :)
ADK,Diali
Thank you :)
Thank you for this. One of the things I really like in Islam is that you have to be clean.
I'll also read about this Imam you were talking about.I'm sorry this is happening to him.
Salaams Sis:
Can the Saudis do this? Ya Allah, it seems crazy! I was unaware of the brother's story.
Natashaamina,
I'm glad you like it :)
Sister Safiyyah,
For some reason the Saudi Arabian embassy controls the management of the mosque. I guess that's why they've been able to do this. It is just a sad thing to watch especially when it's cold as it it now, Imam Asi is praying and delivering a khutba on the side-walk on fridays.
I have been to that mosque many times. It is small, and I dont believe it has an air system. When I was there last it was summer and it was very hot.
I was there to see the Imam, and I have to say Imam Khouj was very nice to me. He knew my FIL and MIL and inquired after my MIL, her family, and my wife.
As a guy married to a Saudi woman, I really dont like the Saudi influence and control over many different organisations here in the USA. I dont think it is a positive one.
My interactions with many different Saudi organisations on many different levels has really given me a bad taste in my mouth for anything of an organised nature that is connected to the Saudis.
BTW,
The issue between those that pray on the street and those that currently run the mosque owes it's roots to the Iranian revolution and the Shia/Sunni split. That is my understanding.
Abu Sinan,
Assalamualeikum, Welcome to my blog. They do have an air system but don't put it on all the time, I guess they want to save on the electric bill. During winter time, some areas are not well heated as well.....Imam Khouj is very nice mashallah. As far as the issue with Imam Asi, it is a very unfortunate one. He shouldn't have to pray outside.
Salams Hijabee, my parents took their Shahada at that masjid in DC!:) They also got married there 17 years ago, alhamdulillah.
Halal Honey,
Mashallah, I got married there as well :)
I really really miss DC! I just love it there.
Oh, and Mabruk!:D
Thanks Halal Honey. You should stop by to visit :)
I did a few months ago. I was born in D.C. :D
Holla next time you're around :)
