Why we shouldn't worry about Terry Jones

Source
[Say: “If both humanity and jinn banded together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could never produce anything like it, even if they backed each other up.” ] (Al-Israa’ 17: 88)

Few days ago, I was watching the news when I stumbled upon a report about Pastor Terry Jones who is planning to burn the Qur'aan on 9/11. At first, I got really sad and upset and I wanted to cry at the thought that the beautiful words of Allah swt were going to be burnt with such an act of ignorance and there was nothing I could do about it. I wonder if Terry Jones ever read the Qur'aan, and if he did and wasn't at least touched by its beauty, Ireally feel sorry for him. The more I watched the report, the more disturbing it became. I found myself helpless in front of such a blatant insult and offense towards the Qur'aan and the Muslims. But then, I got an epiphany.

This man could not burn the Qur'aan. He can burn pieces of paper on which the
Qur'aan is printed, but he certainly can not burn the Qur'aan. Why you may ask? Because, the Quran is preserved in al-lawh al-mahfuz (The Preserved Tablet) as Allah tells us in the Qur'aan:

(85:21) Nay; but this is a glorious Qur'an,
(85:22) inscribed on a well-guarded Tablet

[We have sent down the Reminder, and We will preserve it.] (Al-Hijr 15: 9)

This is the promise of Allah swt. He has promised to preserve the Qur'aan. What these verses infer is that the Qur'aan is inscribed in the Preserved Tablet of Allah swt, and as such even if the whole world came together to corrupt it or destroy it, they wouldn't be able to. Let's rejoice brothers and sisters,Man can not destroy the Qur'aan. If we trust Allah, which we should as Muslims, then there is nothing that we should worry about.

The Qur'aan further states that
"It is nothing less than a message to all nations" (Quran 68:52).
Therefore, regardless of our attachment to it, it doesn't belong to us. It was revealed to all humanity, so this pastor is burning his own book. Also, when the Qur'aan was revealed, technology was almost non-existent, it wasn't printed with ink on beautiful pages, however it was printed in the heart of the believers with the ink of ALLAH swt. It's been over 1400 years today, and that Qur'aan is still alive in the hearts of the Muslims as it was then. There are millions of hafiz ( people who have memorized the entire Qur'aan ) today everywhere in the world, so even if all the Qur'aans in the world were burnt,it wouldn't make a difference because the Qur'aan is alive in the hearts of the Muslims.

Let us then remember that the believers are those who believe in the Unseen and the will of Allah swt. So,if Allah swt allows this to happen, then alhamdulilah because the words of ALLAH SWT can not be extinguished by Man.Like someone said recently "True destruction of the Quran cannot be done with fire, it is destroyed when we fail to remember and practice it's lessons in our daily lives "

And finally, the Qur’aan says:
“Therefore excuse them and proclaim, “Peace”; for they will soon come to know.” (Al-Zukhruf, 43:89).

Then, regardless of how sensitive this can be ,or how painful it is, we will not react to it by violence, or bigotry, we will be on our best behavior according to the teachings of Islam embodied by the character of Rassululah saw. So, Terry Jones, go ahead you can burn ten thousands Qur'Aans if you want, but you can't burn the light of the Qur'aan in the hearts of the believers.

Salaam Aleykum, well said, plus Qur'an can be read online with a selection of English translations on Quranix.net and Corpus.Quran.com

Alhamdulillah it looks like the burning has been called off now anyway! Maybe with a world stirred up and having front page news, even more non-muslims will read and become enlightened too, inshallah.

Eid Mubarek and Peace be on you

Annie,
Waleikum salam wa rahmatulah wa barakatuhuh, this background is temporary as I was having issues with my previous background. Once that's resolved I will go back to it.

I was so happy to learn that Terry Jones backed down from his decision. The love of God cannot be distinguished, nor can His revealed words be removed from the Earth. Peace be unto you.

Oh my dear Hijabee,
such a beautiful post.As so many times before you touched my heart.
And than I think...how can a man who proclaims to be a man of God even think of burning a holly book...I mean even if he's a Christian, still how can he say/plan such an act...To me this is completely illogical!
Mwah my dear :)!

Such an inspiring conclusion to your post - it's so easy to get upset by such people, but then it's important to remember that they get into the news because they are such radicals and so outside the mainstream in their hatred.

Religious extremism in any form is truly offensive. Pastor Terry Jones does not represent true christianity because Jesus preached love, tolerance, and acceptance.

Also, I see you live in DC too?

Hello, Hijabee,

I am also in DC and blog about Islam (and other things) at: staringattheview.blogspot.com

I have a few questions about the the al-lawh al-mahfuz. Much of the Quran is also nasikh wal-mansukh. Does the lawh mahfuz contain the ayaas that were nasikh, or those that were mansukh? It seems strange to me that Allah would have verses in the lawh mahfuz that he later changed?

Hi Hijabee,

I stumbled upon your blog somehow -I think it was linked from another blog or something. This was the first post I saw.

What Pastor Jones tried to do was grossly offensive and insulting to Muslims, yes, and I'm glad that you were so dignified and gracious in your response. I don't believe in burning books, especially not when the express purpose of doing so is to upset a group of people. Books should be read, not burnt, however much you may disagree with them. It's nice that you are more concerned for Terry Jones than angry with him. He does seem to be quite an unpleasant character.

You said this:

"At first, I got really sad and upset and I wanted to cry at the thought that the beautiful words of Allah swt were going to be burnt with such an act of ignorance and there was nothing I could do about it. I wonder if Terry Jones ever read the Qur'aan, and if he did and wasn't at least touched by its beauty"

I just want to tell you what struck me, as a non-Muslim, as I read these words.

Unless I am totally wrong, you appear to be saying that Terry Jones should at least read the Qur'an before making a judgement about it. I agree with you. I have several copies of the Qur'an and I agree that he should at least read one translation before burning (although I think he has read it).

I want to turn the tables here, though, and ask: Did Muhammad read the Bible before making a judgement about it? Well, we know the answer: no he didn't read it, he was illiterate. Yet he had some very strong opinions about Jews and Christians, assuming he agreed with Allah:

"Surely the vilest of animals in Allah's sight are those who disbelieve" (Surah 8:55).

Elsewhere, the Qur'an talks of Jews being turned into apes and swine as punishment from Allah (5.60), those who don't believe in Muhammad being perverse and the worst of all creatures, and so on.

Christians and Jews have been accused by Muslims, for centuries, of corrupting the Bible.

Yet despite condemning the Bible (and condemning those who follow the religions responsible for corrupting it), most Muslims have never read it.

Why, then, should Pastor Jones - or indeed anyone - read the Qur'an before passing judgement on its contents, when billions of Muslims starting with Muhammad have believed so strongly in the perversity and corruption of the Bible (and by extension Jews and Christians), without even reading it?

Have you read the Bible? Did you read the Bible before agreeing with the Islamic perspective that Christians wickedly corrupted the holy revelations of God? The foundation of your religion is built on this claim, after all. If it isn't true, and the Jews and Christians didn't corrupt the Bible, then Islam is false. Have you tested the claims of Islam for yourself by reading the Bible?...

Sophie said...

...
You may say 'I don't need to read the Bible to know it's full of corruption, because God says so in the Qur'an'. But then to be consistent you can't be upset when someone burns the Qur'an without reading it and directs hate speech towards Muslims as the Qur'an does against Jews and Christians and other unbelievers; after all, perhaps the god or gods of their religion has told them that Muslims are the vilest of animals, and their scriptures corrupted and false? (of course, the Bible doesn't mention Islam at all, I'm talking hypothetically).

My point is this: by believing the Qur'an and following Islam, you are necessarily condemning Christians and Jews as corrupters of God's word, and vile animals, and I hope that you read the Bible before doing so.

Or perhaps you have read the Bible, in which case I commend you for being open-minded enough to do so. But why do you condemn Terry Jones for maybe doing something that you know for certain that Muhammad did (pass judgement on a faith and the people who follow it without reading the scriptures they follow)?

I hope that none of this comment appears confrontational. It's not my intention to argue or offend, it's just to show you a point of view that perhaps you haven't considered before. I hope you take these comments as they are meant and not as a personal attack. I know that there are verses that are less controversial, more merciful towards non-Muslims in the Qur'an than the ones I have quoted here; it's just that I quoted ones that were pertinent, so please know that it's not my intention here to misrepresent your faith.

Kind regards,

Sophie
