Please Help this Sister in Need

Assalamualeikum,
I'm coming to you on this blessed Friday to ask for help for this dear sister that I know who lives in Maryland. For privacy reasons, I will not reveal her name or specific information . This sister was married for 8 years to her husband when he suddenly left this summer. He did not provide any reasons whatsoever, just that he did not want to be with her anymore. The estranged husband filed for divorce and disappeared leaving her in the 2 bedroom apartment they were renting together. Since then, she's been going through a lot of fitnah as he left phone bills amouting to $800 and did not pay the rent before leaving. Now this sister is a babysitter and doesn't make much! She also didn't expect her husband to leave hence did not have any savings as he emptied their bank account before leaving. Now, he refuses to support the daughter they have together saying he can't afford it. Last week,we learned that her ex-husband remarried and left for Las Vegas for his honeymoon while the same week he told her he couldn't pay for her daughter's school because he was broke! The sister presently lives in a 2 bedroom apartment and is actively looking for a roomate due to the fact that she can't afford the rent by herself. She hasn't found one yet. This morning I received a distressed call from her because they're threatening to evict her from her apartment if she doesn't pay the $3,000 balance left by her husband. Now, this sister is barely making it on her sitter's salary and can't afford to pay this extra $3,000. When she informed her ex-husband, he told her to move out coz he doesn't intend to pay the rent he owed! So please, please if you have any $$$ to spare, help this sister for the sake of Allah! Sorry for the grammatical errors, Im at work and just wanted to get this out before the end of the day. All you need to donate money is a paypal account. May Allah reward you!

Has she also sought out aid from the local masajid? This is so sad.

Has she spoken with a local women's shelter. Not for her to move there, but they might be able to help her.

Inexplicable Muslima said...

I know from experience a lot of womans shelters do not accept children... which is very cold IMHO...

Also... I'm in dire straits myself and the masjids turned down my request for aid, mostly becasue no one knew me.

But... Tell this sister to apply at Dar Ul Hijrah (SIC) in Falls Church.. they are good about people in need...

p.s. I have gotten a little help from them in the past.. all they ask is volunteer efforts.

Inexplicable Muslimah,
Thank you for your comment. I just remembered that you were living in DC too and read on your blog that you were looking for some niqabi friends.... I don't wear the niqab myself but would love to meet up with you if you're up for it!

Ms Unique,
Salam sister. Thank you for your duas for her and for linking to this post. Yes, it is truly sad to see situations like this in the ummah! Our men keep on abusing our women and follow this dunya as if there is no tomorrow. May Allah reward you all for your efforts.

This is really awful in so many ways. InshAllah she can find better work for the sake of her child and inshAllah the mosque will be able to give her assistance. This sister will be in my prayers. JazakAllahu Kair for your efforts to help her

This is terrible for her, I will contribute what I can and I will make duas for her also.

Where is the sister's family? Did she not make any saving in those 8 years? if she did then she should inform the police about the husband emptying the joint account. Sister's cant be naive especially when they have kids. I hope the best for her.

Noor said...

You all should look at Muslimlink an online newspaper in your area. They have sisters wanting roommates and even jobs.

May Allah help her :( I would have her contact a mosque like Dar al hijrah for some financial help.

Saalam Hijabee,
Has she tried contacting Islamic charity organizations. Many of them are able to lend a helping hand.

She really should notify the autorities about this. a lot of sisters try not to bring attention to such issues or do what they should be doing, for whatever reason. like someone said we act naive and cower, when this ex of hers is the real coward! how do we know this is legitamite anyway?

seema said...

American laws are strict about these kind of abandonment, she should contact the authorities and get help.
She may not get enough help with online contributions, most of them will doubt the reality of her desperation.

Assalam-alaikam,
may Allah ease this sisters suffering. I will link back on my blog insh'Allah.
This brother is beyond disgusting.

May Allalh accept your duas. InshaAllah her situation will get better.

Anonymous,
As I said in the post, her husband took the $8,000 she's been saving for a down payment on a house. She presently doesn't have any savings cushion. She did not want the authorities to get involved at first but she will be meeting with Social Services on Monday inshaAllah!

hijabee said...

NOOR,
Thank you for your sweet comment. I just picked up the last issue of The Muslm Link @ the masjid this morning. The thing is she's not looking for a job as she has one already. I think the best option she has if she can't pay the rent is to find a cheaper apartment on the other side of town. She doesn't want to eplore that route as of now due to limited transportation as well as her daughter's school.

Umm Khadijah,
Thank you, I will check it out :)

Yasmeen,
Ameen!

Ihsan,
I will check that website out and keep her posted. Thank you.

hijabee said...

Halimah,
She's working on contacting the authorities. I guess there is no way for you to know if this is legit or not. Just know that my fear of ALLAH SWT will not allow me to take people's money by fabricating a story ahuzubillah!

Seema,
That is true and she's currently working on that, we will see how that goes inshaAllah.

hijabee said...

Umm Salihah,
Ameen and thank you for linking back to the story. May ALlah reward you!

Cecilia,
Thanks for the award. You know I lost the link of your blog, thanks for stopping by!

And to all the sisters who contributed to help this sister in need. May Allah reward you with Jannah and MAy you never find yourself in need in this world. May Allah swt shower you with His Love and protection in this world and the next!

I've received new contributions but they're not updated yet on the ChipIn website because I'm waiting for PayPal to verify my account. So if you've donated money and haven't seen the amount posted, don't worry. It was processed, just not posted yet. It should take between 3-5 business days according to Paypal. Jazakallahu!

Salam sis. May help this sister and all the muslims in the world in their time of need.

1st She needs to go to organisations that deal with debt who will provide free advice on how to manage the situation.
2nd Seek free legal advice. Some firms offer pro bono work or 1 hour free sessions. There must be a centre which offers charitable free legal advice. The debts may have nothing legally to do with her and those concerned will have to chase her ex for the money not her. It depends what was in her name, both or just inshaAllah his. Also they offer advice about rent issues and her right to stay in the property.
4th If you have a good landlord, be honest and tell them what happened. InshaAllah they can sort something out.
5th More importantly do 2 rakats and read the Quran. This is a cure for all problems. Allah will never fail the ones who turn to him. HE is the only one who can help her.

May Allah give her ease soon. Ameen.

I hope you're doing fine and I also hope you'll update us on your friend's situation.

Assalam alaikum,

Thank you for contacting HalfDate.com

Many of the comments are valuable, like contacting available social and masjid services.

To donate to an individual, we need an organization to verify the case and adopt it.

We will email you for more information.

May Allah reward everyone and make it easy for the sister

Does she have enough food?? Muslim or not, if she were to go to the local Catholic church and explain her situation she would find help of some sort. Especially since she has children *and* was totally abandoned by her husband! If they haven't any food to give they could at least help refer her to organizations that can help her.

Does she have a mosque within reach?!?!

If she's shy is there any way you can talk to church or mosque for this woman??

Pardon me but this is yet another reason I despise Feminism ~ it gave us "no fault divorce" that totally allows a husband to abandon his wife and children and leave them in this horrible situation! God have mercy on that awful man... he's going to need mercy!! The value of women is totally unknown in this godless "Liberated" "women are equal" society we now live in!

Oh...I can't give!! PayPal and I do not work together. They demanded my bank account number while people from China were hacking into PayPal accounts here on the islands. When I complained to PayPal, instead of responding to me and helping me they blacklisted me!! Now I can't even use my debit card through PayPal without an account.
Personally I wish something besides PayPal would become popular! PayPal is not a nice service.

Moving can be VERY expensive! Most times you have to save up first month's rent, last months rent, and a deposit. And usually you can only find an "affordable" apartment in a dangerous neighborhood!

hijabee said...

HalfDate,
Waleikum Salam,
I sent you an email. Thanks for getting back to us!

Coffee Catholic,
yes she has enough food. At first, she did not contact the mosque or any other organizations I guess because she did not want people to know about her situation! She met with social services on Monday though and filled out a bunch of papers and is waiting for them to get back to her. I'm also trying to work with HalfDate to see if a mosque or an NGO can sponsor her case so they can raise money for her. And I totally agree with you when you say : May God have mercy on this man, he really needs it! Women are not supposed to be abused and abandonned especially when they have your child. I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Paypal, that sucks! Unfortunately, they're the only ones I know who offer these services. Yes moving is expensive, I guess that's why she's leaning more towards finding a roomate! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!
